Dog With a Pearl Earring refers to an edited image of a brown dog with a human ear looking over her shoulder, wearing a pearl earring and a scarf around her head, resembling the classical art painting Girl With a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. The image went viral on social media in mid-September 2024, including sites like Facebook, X / Twitter and Reddit, as the subject of memes, including posts comparing her to various celebrities.

Origin

On the morning of September 11th, 2024, the Facebook^[1] page The Picasso of Meme posted an image of a dog-human hybrid sitting by a window and looking over her shoulder. The dog is wearing a scarf, has a human ear and is wearing a pearl earring. The image appears to be a recreation of the classical Vermeer painting Girl With a Peal Earring.

The post gained around 25 reactions in two days. It is unclear if this is the true origin of the meme, but it is the earliest known account to post it.

Spread

The post gained viral spread through reposts over the following hours and days, also inspiring memes. Later on September 11th, 2024, X^[2] user @tapinaksahaf shared the image, garnering over 69,000 likes in two days.

About 20 minutes later, X^[3] user @EastEndJoe posted the image, writing, "Immigrants will never notice Tanya with her clever disguise," garnering over 12,000 likes in two days. The post references the Haitian immigrants eating pets rumor.

Roughly two hours later on September 11th, 2024, X^[4] user @ElJeringasLoko reposted the image, writing, "The girl called Deisy," garnering over 167,000 likes and 16,000 reposts in two days. X^[5] user @twaniimals also reposted the image, garnering over 395,000 likes in two days.

That night, X^[6] user @MutaFuka quote-reposted the image from @ElJeringasLoko, writing, "Hailey Bieber," comparing the dog to the model, garnering over 116,000 likes. Also that same day, Instagram^[7] user nderakoreami posted the image, garnering over 400,000 likes in the same span of time.

On September 12th, X^[8] user @intentisons then posted the dog next to an image of Hailey Bieber, garnering over 162,000 likes in a day.

Later on September 11th, 2024, Redditor u/dark_nodens posted an image macro to the subreddit /r/dankmemes^[9] using the image, writing, "how my wife looks at me after 3 hours of makeup," garnering over 5,800 upvotes in a day. X^[10] user @itsyaboyari__ then posted the image, writing, "I can’t explain but this looks like Ariana Grande," garnering over 10,000 likes in a day.
