"Anxiety" is a 2019 song by American rapper Doechii that notably samples the 2011 indie pop song "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. The song's music video, released in April 2025, also contains references to the music video for "Somebody That I Used to Know." Following the release of the music video, the song garnered significant attention online, with some referring to it as "Coworker Core" and "Obamacore," and became a subject of jokes and memes on social media.

Origin

On November 10th, 2019, rapper Doechii released her original music video for "Anxiety" on her YouTube[1] channel Iamdoechii. The video (shown below), recorded in Doechii's room, garnered over 1.4 million views in six years.

The song samples "Somebody I Used to Know," a 2011 hit indie song by Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter Gotye.



On April 18th, 2025, Doechii released her official music video for the song, releasing it on YouTube.[2] The video garnered over 12 million views in two weeks (shown below).

On April 18th, 2025, the X[3] account @Kurrco posted a two-minute-long clip from the music video, with the post accruing over 56.5 million views, 8,300 reposts and 31,000 likes in two weeks.

Later that day, X[4] user @gloxxexi quoted the post, commenting, "youtube shorts music." The post (shown below) received over 8,600 reposts and 237,000 likes in two weeks.



On April 19th, streamer xQc quoted the post, writing, "This is just awful, what and unfortunate use of the original song." The post (shown below) received over 6,300 reposts and 155,000 likes on X[5] in two weeks.



In the following week, more posts criticizing and defending the song and its sampling of "Somebody That I Used to Know" were shared on social media, with some users describing the song as Coworker Core and Obamacore.

The discourse inspired various memes in subsequent days. For example, on April 21st, 2025, X[6] user posted a DJ Lobster GIF caption meme about the song that gained over 3,800 reposts and 47,000 likes in nine days (shown below).
