About

Dodging the Flyer refers to a scene from Cartoon Network show Regular Show in which characters Mordecai and Rigby fail to hand out a flyer to a passer-by. In 2018, the screen capture of the scene gained popularity as an object-labeling meme.

Origin

On May 9th, 2011, Regular Show episode Grave Sight premiered on Cartoon Network.[1] In one scene, main characters Mordecai and Rigby attempt to hand out a flyer for the upcoming movie showing at the park to a passer-by, only to be dodged.



On October 19th, 2018, Spanish Facebook[2] group Plantillas Para Memes posted a three-panel meme template based on the scene (shown below, left). The post received 870 likes in three months, with Facebook users posting several edits of the template in the comments.



Spread

In October 2018 the template rose in popularity among Spanish-speaking users, with several notable examples being posted to Memedroid. [3]



On October 31st, 2018, Imgur[4] user Kachial uploaded the first known English version of the meme. The post gained over 2,800 points and 120,000 views in three months.



On January 4th, 2019, Redditor[5] MisterPatatophobe posted the meme template to /r/MemeEconomy subreddit. The post received over 24,300 upvotes in five days. In the following days, numerous edits of the image were posted to /r/dankmemes[6] and /r/regularshowmemes[7] subreddits.
