About

Do You Think Love Can Bloom On A Battlefield? is a memorable quote spoken by the character Hal "Otacon" Emmerich in the 1998 video game Metal Gear Solid. The line, spoken at an intense moment in the game, has long been celebrated by the Metal Gear fandom for its cheesiness, leading it to be repeated often and parodied or used in memes online as a catchphrase.

Origin

The line is spoken by Otacon in Metal Gear Solid, released in 1998 for the PlayStation. The earliest known repost of the scene was uploaded by YouTuber CTUDirectorJackBauer on February 28th, 2007, gaining over 90,000 views in 16 years (shown below).

Spread

The line has long been celebrated by the Metal Gear fandom. On July 6th, 2008, YouTuber HonorableShadow posted a clip of Snake voice actor David Hayter reading the line at Anime Expo 2008, gaining over 187,000 views in 15 years (shown below, left). On September 13th, 2017, Polygon posted a video in which two actors perform the scene as though it were a theatrical production, gaining over 90,000 views in six years (shown below, right).

The line itself has been the subject of several discussions on social media. Threads about the question have appeared on Reddit,[1] ResetEra[2] and NeoGAF,[3] among other websites. Additionally, it has inspired some fan parodies, imagining the dialogue between characters from other media properties.

For example, on July 31st, 2012, DeviantArt[4] user Giant Mosquito posted a piece featuring My Little Pony characters (shown below, left). On March 3rd, 2022, iFunny[5] user nyanlothep posted a Warhammer 40K meme with the dialogue, gaining 10 likes in roughly one year (shown below, right). The meme is notably a reference to the 40K fanfiction called Love Can Bloom, which references the MGS quote and meme.[6]
