About
Do you Love Me? Do You Need Me? Yes or No is a TikTok trend set to the song "Do You?" by TroyBoi in which a person or character is shown under the caption, "Do you love me?" along with two options underneath, "yes" or "no." After one of the prompts is chosen, the above caption changes to the next lyric, "Do you need me?" The trend began on TikTok as early as 2019 and became popularized on the app in late May and early June 2023.
Origin
It is unclear when exactly TikTokers began using the sound for "Do You?" by TroyBoi for multiple-choice style POV videos. One of the earliest known examples was posted by TikToker[1] @ialuca_b on October 5th, 2019. In the video, she lip dubs to the song's lyrics "Do you love me?" and then presents the lyrics on-screen with three options, "Yes," "No," and "Maybe." After "maybe" is selected she lip dubs, "Do you need me?" and "No" is selected. The video gained over 729,000 views in four years (shown below, left). That day she posted an alternate version of the meme to TikTok[2] where "yes" is selected, garnering over 1.8 million views in four years (shown below, right).
The trend continued to spread over the following years, with many simplifying it to consist of simple the choices "yes" or "no." In March 2020, YouTuber[8] Crazy Tik Tok uploaded a compilation of videos doing the trend that gained over 160,000 views in three years. On July 8th, 2020, TikToker[3] @dafaatmja posted a video following the trend that gained over 10 million views in three years (shown below).
Spread
As the trend continued to spread, TikTokers began applying various characters and animations to it. For example, on October 4th, 2021, TikToker[4] @ihanakaxkax posted a version of the trend using the character from the video game Your Boyfriend, garnering over 788,000 views in two years. On May 30th, 2023, TikToker[5] @_grey_sea_ posted a version using the Once-ler, garnering over 1.9 million views in a week (shown below).
The trend became increasingly popular throughout late May and early June 2023. On the same day, TikToker[6] @filmsofwills posted a version using members of the royal family, garnering over 2.5 million views in a week (shown below, left). On June 3rd, TikToker[7] @jahsehxro posted a version using Barack Obama, garnering over 6 million views in three days (shown below, right).
