Disgusted Homelander, also known as Homelander Staring, refers to a scene in The Boys TV series in which the character Homelander (portrayed by actor Antony Starr) is looking at Firecracker (Valorie Curry) with disgust after she coughs next to him. Posted online in July 2024 during season four of the show, the scene has been used as a reaction and caption format, both as an image and a video, in memes.

Origin

On July 18th, 2024, episode 8 "Assassination Run" of season 4 of the satirical superhero television series The Boys premiered in the United States.^[1] In one scene of the episode, the character Homelander watches in revulsion as his fellow superhero Firecracker coughs next to him while sitting at a conference table. On that day, the X^[2] account homelander reactions & clips (@homelanderbot) uploaded the clip of Homelander's reaction, with the video (shown below) gaining over 6,300 reposts and 69,000 likes in five days.

On July 19th, X^[3] user @Ic3Evaa quoted the video with the caption, "He's an unbelievable actor man," with the post gaining over 15,000 reposts and 290,000 likes in four days. On July 18th, TikTok^[4] user @luv.shad posted the earliest notable caption meme based on the video, adding a caption referencing the COVID-19 Pandemic. The post (shown below) received over 3.7 million views and 767,000 likes in five days.

Spread

In the following week, the caption format saw further spread on X / Twitter and TikTok as it was used in more memes. On July 20th, 2024, X^[5] user @kirawontmiss copied the COVID-19 meme, with their post gaining over 16,000 reposts and 204,000 likes in three days.

Later on July 20th, X^[6] user @SavinTheBees posted a caption meme that received over 1,100 reposts and 5,500 likes in three days (shown below).

Multiple posts using the reaction, including image caption, GIF caption and video caption memes, went viral on social media in late July 2024.
