About

Discord Kitten refers to a slang term about Discord users who label themselves or seek out "kittens" in reference to young, female users. The term was popularized with the catchphrase "Daddy will be back on Discord soon, Kitten" and other variants of it. Discord Kittens were first referenced in 2016, but more notably within NSFW role-playing subreddits in 2017. The term became more mainstream starting in 2019 and most notably in late 2020 on platforms like Reddit, Twitter and TikTok where it became the subject of memes.

Origin

The earliest known reference to Discord Kittens was posted by Twitter[1] user SlaytypeDA on December 31st, 2016 (shown below). It received two likes over six years. Overall, this tweet alludes to the term being used within private Discord servers, originally becoming a cliche and slang term there before spreading to more public platforms.

Spread

In early 2017, Redditors started making posts that referenced themselves as "kittens" and wanting to connect further with people on Discord. These posts were made in subreddits designed to meet people with common interests. For instance, the earliest known Reddit post of this nature was posted on January 17th, 2017, by Redditor Kiibun to the subreddit /r/GamerPals,[2] designed for people to make online gaming friends. Within Kiibun's post (shown below) she says that she has a "kitten name," which is "Maggie." The post only received two upvotes but nine comments, all of them being male Redditors linking their own Discords, hoping to connect with a Kitten.

On September 21st, 2017, Redditor schwifterr made a post to /r/teenagers[3] titled, "actual secondhand cringe." Within the post, they talked about a kid at their school who they know on Discord that one time referred to someone in real life as a "Kitten." The post (shown below) received 27 upvotes in five years. Again, this alludes to a growing awareness of the term within Discord circles that built throughout 2017.

In 2018, posts were made in NSFW subreddits, like /r/BDSMpersonals[4] and /r/FurryKikPals,[5] about being a Kitten and wanting to connect on Discord.

On August 30th, 2019, Twitter[6] user strwbearrie posted a tweet that read, "daddy will be back on discord soon kitten," earning nine likes over three years (shown below, top). This is the first instance online of someone using the word "daddy" in conjunction with "Discord" and "Kitten." On November 27th, 2019, Twitter[7] user Markcord posted a tweet that referenced both "daddy" and "Discord Kitten," receiving over 110 likes in two years (shown below, bottom).

On February 12th, 2020, Twitter[8] user HAMMETTBITCH posted a tweet that captioned an image with, "i’ll be on discord later tonight, kitten,” being the first on the platform to do so and earning only four likes over the course of two years (shown below, left). More notably, on April 14th, 2020, Twitter[9] user scobesx posted a tweet that captioned an image of a "Neckbeard Nest" with, "daddy will be on discord soon kitten," receiving over 840 likes in two years (shown below, right).

On February 16th, 2020, Instagram [11] page drivers_real_catholic_official posted a Discord Kitten meme that received 39 likes, being the first on the platform to do so (shown below, left). On March 17th, Instagram[12] page beefchomgle posted a picture of a Discord user with dyed purple hair, captioning the screenshot, "don't worry kitten, daddy will be back on discord," and earning roughly 2,000 likes in two years (shown below, right).

On June 25th, 2020, Redditor weebthrowawyaccount made a post to /r/justneckbeardthings,[10] that included a Snapchat screenshot (shown below). The image was captioned, "hop on discord, kitten," and it earned over 300 upvotes in two years.

The term "Discord Kitten" wasn't added to Urban Dictionary until September 23rd, 2020, posted by the user k1rbytop1.[13] Over the course of two years, the definition's received over 680 likes (shown below). Additionally, the definition includes the Discord term "Nitro," which is "pretty much like discord premium" according to another Urban Dictionary[14] definition.

The term wasn't widely popularized until mid-2021, however, when Twitch streamers Quackity and GeorgeNotFound became associated with being a Daddy and a Kitten. The most notable instance of this happened live on stream on April 26th, 2021. The clip from the stream was recorded and uploaded to YouTube on the 27th by the channel Minecraft Clips 2021 (shown below).

On April 26th, Quackity tweeted[15] "discord kitten" and received roughly 274,500 likes over the course of seven months (shown below).
