Omastar, one of the original 151 Pokémon, likes to boogie.

#139, Omastar can only be obtained in Red and Blue by evolving Omanyte, who is revived from a Dome Fossil obtained in Mt. Moon. When sent out in battle, he promptly cuts a rug. Omastar appears to be dancing in so many of his sprites across the Pokémon franchise that soon, the internet began to take notice.

One of the earliest known examples was a 2009 video by TommyKoopa on Youtube, who animated a slideshow of Omastar's various sprites from Generation 1, making it appear as if he was dancing to Miror B's theme from Pokémon Coloseum.

The term "Disco Omastar" was first coined in 2010 by Youtube group Adamant Ditto in their series of "Terrible Pokémon Sprites" videos.

Spriter JoshR691, a member of Adamant Ditto, made a custom sprite animation of Omastar dancing as part of his long-running Pokémon Sprite project at The Spriters' Resource. The quality of the sprite and animation was such that many people mistook it from an official animation from one a recent Pokémon game. The gif made its rounds around the internet, appearing on GoNintendo and a few other sites, eventually making its way to Tumblr in the form of random gif sets, where Omastar's passion and energy can be properly showcased to the world.
