On March 7th, 2024, United States President Joe Biden delivered a speech for the State of the Union address. At a particular moment of the event, which was livestreamed by many news outlets,[1] House Speaker Mike Johnson, who was sitting behind the President, seemed to nod and look disappointed while Biden was mentioned the January 6th Storming of the Capitol event.
That same day, X[2] user @Acyn posted the earliest known clip showing Mike Johnson's reaction (shown below), which garnered roughly 178,000 views and 7,100 likes in a day.
Spread
Shortly after Biden's speech ended, Johnson's reaction became a viral topic on social media, especially among Republicans who sympathized with the politician's display of emotions. For example, on March 8th, 2024, X[3] user @stillgray (Ian Miles Cheong) posted a clip showing the House Speaker's disappointed face (shown below) paired with the caption, "We are all Mike Johnson." The post amassed over 187,000 views and 11,000 likes in a few hours.
The Republican politican's reaction also became a viral source for memes and jokes on TikTok. For instance, on March 8th, TikTok[4] user @jordangarrido posted Johnson's reaction meme paired with the overlay text, "If I had to guess what is going through Speaker Mike Johnson's head rn." The post (shown below, left) received roughly 6,000 plays and 275 likes in a few hours.
On the same day, TikTok[5] user @thisispatrick19 posted a different moment from Biden's speech when he said, "America's safe today when I took office," focusing on Johnson's reaction (shown below, right), which amassed over 120,000 plays and 19,000 likes in a few hours.
