About

The "Did I?" Goat, also known as Japeth Singing "Did I?" refers to an exploitable video template showing the goat character named Japeth from the cartoon movie Hoodwinked! saying, "Did I? Did I?" to Little Red Riding Hood and then turning it into a song with his banjo on a porch. The meme trended on TikTok in early 2023 via a CapCut template that allowed users to layer the green-screened scene over images and videos, allowing them to portray a scenario in which they'd humorously deny accusations.

Origin

The movie Hoodwinked! was released in American theaters on January 13th, 2006.[1] In one scene of the movie, Little Red Riding Hood approaches a porch where an elderly goat character named Japeth is sitting. The scene was first posted to TikTok[2] on January 28th, 2021, by user @sazstagram, earning roughly 390,400 plays and 43,400 likes in two years. About a year and a half later, on September 20th, 2022, TikToker[3] @downmemoirelane posted a higher-quality version of the scene, gaining roughly 49,700 plays and 2,900 likes in five months (shown below).

The first-known meme that used the scene was uploaded on January 24th, 2023, by TikToker[4] @jessmiguessmi, who captioned it, "Me when the police asks if I planted explosives under an orphanage." Over the course of one month, the video received roughly 3.6 million plays and 837,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

On February 11th, 2023, TikToker[5] @twitch_akenzen posted a video using the meme format, captioning it, "'Mom you said dinner was ready,'" and object labeling Japeth and Little Red Riding Hood as "Mom" and "Me." Over the course of ten days, the video received roughly 923,600 likes (shown below, left). Soon after, other creators started using the video's audio as a TikTok sound,[6] additionally using a new CapCut template that made a greenscreen out of the scene. For instance, one of the most viral uses was uploaded on February 19th, 2023, by TikToker[7] @dogcat0629 who put the goat in a Target store with text reading, "'I thought you said you had money.'" The video earned roughly 3.5 million plays and 943,300 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Various iterations surfaced using the template in February 2023 as the TikTok sound[6] amassed over 17,400 videos using it in the span of ten days.
