Diavolo's Death Loop refers to a series of memes which reference the ultimate fate of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure villain Diavolo, who is forced to endlessly experience death over and over again. Starting in late July 2019, memes imagining humorous ways for Diavolo to die has gained popularity among the anime fans.
Origin
On March 1st, 1999, chapter 588 "Gold Experience Requiem, Part 3" of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga was published.[1] In the chapter, the ultimate fate of villain Diavolo is revealed: affected by Giorno Giovanna's stand Gold Experience Requiem, he is forced to experience death over and over in an endless loop, unable to ever finally die (manga panels shown below).
On July 28th, 2019, episode 38 "Gold Experience Requiem" of part five the anime adaptation of the series premiered.[2] In the episode, Diavolo's Death Loop is shown.
Spread
Following the premiere of the episode, the plot detail gained immediate recognition amont the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fans. On July 28th, 2019, subreddits /r/DiavoloDeathCount[3] and /r/imsorrydiavolo[4] were launched, collecting memes imagining various deaths Diavolo could experience. In the days following the premiere, multiple variations of the meme were posted to both communities, as well as to /r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit (examples shown below).
On July 31st, /r/DiavoloDeathCount and /r/imsorrydiavolo merged,[5] with the latter subreddit being archived.
