About
Diary of a Wimpy Kid "Total Eclipse of the Heart," also known as the Turn Around Meme or the And I Need You More than Ever Meme, refers to a clip from the 2010 movie Diary of a Wimpy Kid in which several children sing the Bonnie Tyler power ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart," though several are off pitch while singing the song. In October 2023, the scene became a CapCut meme on TikTok in which each child was object labeled to represent weak members of a certain group, among other things.
Origin
In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, released in 2010, students in the main character Greg Heffley's class audition for a school production of The Wizard of Oz by singing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. Most of the kids are not able to sing the song well, but Greg gives an impressive performance (shown below).
On April 29th, 2023, TikTok user @_swiftyggeditor_[1] posted the scene, gaining over 11 million views in six months (shown below).
Spread
In mid-October of 2023, the scene became the subject of memes in which users would label each of the children, save for Greg, as an undesirable member of a group, and labeling Greg the option that's supposed to be the best. For example, on October 12th, 2023, TikToker coleclark49[2] uploaded an edit of the scene to discuss characters in Apex Legends,, gaining over 8,700 views in six days (shown below, left). The same day, user @jazz.wz[3] posted an example about Houston Texans quarterbacks, gaining over 5,800 views in the same timeframe (shown below, right).
On October 15th, user @rey_has_abs[4] posted a popular variation of the meme, discussing him trying to find his "type" before landing on "9 year olds." The video gained over 3.5 million views in three days (shown below).
