About
Devil Vortex Saws or DV Saws is a Losslike referring to a peculiar arrangement of 54 sawblades and other objects found at the top of the Devil Vortex level in the rhythm-based running game Geometry Dash, which was verified by player ToshDeluxe in 2017. The controversy surrounding potential cheating by ToshDeluxe during the verification of the level, at which time the seemingly random placement of the sawblades was presented as indirect proof, resulted in sawblades becoming a meme within the community, with users sharing images of objects arranged in the same fashion as the saws.
Origin
On April 21st, 2017, Geometry Dash player ToshDeluxe uploaded a video of his verification (first ever successful completion) of the Extreme Demon level Devil Vortex, created by Rustam (video shown below).[1][2]
In August 2018, Geometry Dash player Npesta accused ToshDeluxe of cheating the verification by "semi-autoing" the level (meaning that ToshDeluxe placed invisible jump pads and gravity changes in certain difficult areas of the level so it partly completed itself). According to Npesta's accusation, the blades were placed to hide the fact that invisible objects were added (Npesta's video no longer available).
In a response video (shown below, left), posted on YouTube[3] on September 3rd, 2018, ToshDeluxe claimed that he placed the saws at the top of the level in order to copy and use the objects to buff the level.
On February 14th, 2023, YouTuber[4] NothingIsScary posted a video reviewing the controversy that gained over 209,000 views in five months (shown below, right).
Spread
The so-called Devil Vortex Saws became an in-joke within the Geometry Dash community but remained relatively obscure until 2022. On March 28th, 2022, Twitter[5] account Guess That GD Level tweeted an image of the saws, with the tweet gaining over 110 retweets and 1,300 likes in one year (shown below, left). On March 30th, 2022, an unknown Redditor posted a photograph of coins arranged in a manner resembling Devil Vortex Saws, writing, "dropped some change on my desk made me think of devil vortex for some reason." The post received over 400 upvotes in the /r/geometrydash[6] subreddit in one year (shown below, right).
The meme achieved virality within the community in Summer 2022, primarily on Reddit. For example, on June 30th, 2022, Redditor Yitu69 posted a Terraria recreation of the meme that gained over 510 upvotes in the /r/geometrydash[7] subreddit in one year (shown below, left). On July 9th, Redditor[8] Fluffy_Speech_8567 posted an image of a fake Twitter banner for McDonald's which resembled the DV saws. The post (shown below, right) gained over 890 upvotes in the subreddit in one year.
On July 24th, an unknown user posted a rant about being annoyed with the Devil Vortex Saws memes, which gained over 440 upvotes in /r/geometrydash[9] and was used as a copypasta.
