About

DeSantis Stance is a photograph of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hunched awkwardly next to Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano at a 2022 event for Turning Point USA. The picture was widely mocked and memed on social media by many, with some comparing Desantis' stance to awkward stances typical of former President Donald Trump.

Origin

On August 22nd, 2022, Twitter user @lizchar^[1] posted a picture of Ron DeSantis standing awkwardly next to Doug Mastriano at a Turning Point USA event, writing, "Just two dudes standing, doesn't get any better than that." The tweet gained over 1,200 retweets and 21,000 likes in three days (shown below).

Spread

As the tweet spread online in late August 2022, many compared DeSantis' stance to stances typical of Donald Trump. For example, Twitter user @Goodpoliticguy^[2] joked that DeSantis was copying Trump's “this is my first day with human arms” stance on August 22, 2022, gaining over 20 retweets and 800 likes in three days (shown below, left). Similarly, Twitter user @briantylercohen^[3] joked the same day that DeSantis looked like it was his first day with arms, gaining over 2,800 retweets and 44,000 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).

Others made jokes about DeSantis' stance as the image continued to be used in image caption memes on Twitter. On August 22nd, user @FPWellman^[4] was one of several tweeters who compared DeSantis to Edgar, the villain of Men In Black who is taken over by an alien wearing his skin as a suit, gaining over 20 retweets and 230 likes in three days (shown below, left). Also that day, Twitter user @borgposting^[5] used the picture of DeSantis as a reaction image, joking "trying on suits at jcpenney with mom," gaining over 110 retweets and 1,800 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
