Origin

On November 22nd, 2020, the Las Vegas Raiders played the Kansas City Chiefs. That night, the Sunday Night Football Twitter[1] account tweeted the photograph of quarterback Derek Carr with the caption, "Just Derek Carr staring directly into your soul." The post received more than 4,700 likes and 600 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below).

Following the post, Barstool Sports tweeted[2] the photo with the caption, "When Sephora runs out of eyeliner." The tweet received more than 10,000 likes and 730 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, left).

People continued to post the photo with joke captions throughout the evening. For example, NFL analyst Mina Kimes tweeted[3] the picture with the caption, "when someone says Depeche Mode is better than The Cure." The tweet received more than 7,800 likes and 595 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, left).

Others compared the photo to other cultural figures, such as the character Mac from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (shown below, right).
