About

Denial Is A River In Egypt, Your Husband Is Gay is a phrase spoken by Wendy Williams to a caller who suspects her husband is bisexual in a 2006 episode of the reality TV series The Wendy Williams Experience. The audio clip went viral on TikTok in late November through December 2022 as a source for lip dub videos.

Origin

The Wendy Williams Experience ran on VH1 for eight episodes between October 20th, 2006, to December 9th, 2006. The show featured a segment where Williams gives advice to callers. In one episode, a caller tells Wendy that she thinks her husband is bisexual. She describes why she thinks that and Wendy yells, "well he's gay, stupid!" Later during the same call, she yells, "Denial is a river in Egypt, your husband is gay!" She then says she should stay with him if she wants. The clip was uploaded to YouTube[1] on June 24th, 2011, garnering over 54,000 views in 11 years (shown below).

On November 19th, 2022, TikToker[2] @colossal.bussy posted the clip to TikTok, captioned, "Me talking to one of da boyz's girlfriends about what I saw in the locker rooms," garnering over 250,000 views in a month. This is the earliest known meme on TikTok using the clip.

Spread

The original sound for @colossal.bussy's sound went viral over the next month, inspiring over 33,000 uses in that span of time. For example, on November 21st, 2022, TikToker[3] @hectorellis_ posted a skit about the "fruity teacher at school" using the audio, garnering over 5 million views in a month (shown below, left). On November 27th, Twitter[4] user @polloreactions shared the clip, gaining over 92,000 views and 330 likes in a month. On December 2nd, TikToker[5] @itsanw posted a video about denying her lactose intolerance, garnering over 5.5 million views in three weeks (shown below, right).

On December 4th, the clip was shared to /r/h3h3productions[6] by a user requesting it be added as a sound bit on the H3 Podcast, garnering over 170 upvotes in three weeks.
