About

#DemThrones is a social media hashtag used for discussion of the American television series Game of Thrones by members of the Black Twitter community. Similar discussions have been tagged using the hashtag "ThronesYall."

Origin

The earliest known usage of the hashtag was posted by Twitter [1] user @TheRealHeemDee on May 13th, 2012 (shown below, left). Several days later, the Twitter account for the podcast FiyaStarter posted the tag (shown below, right). The podcast has since claimed ownership for the hashtag's creation.[2]

Spread

Over the next four years, members of the Black Twitter community used the tag to catalog opinions about the series. On May 16th, 2016, Tech Insider[3] published a piece on the #DemThrones community, calling it the show's "Best Commentary." However, the article started a controversy around the creation of the meme between the FiyaStarter Podcast and the Twitter account @BlackGirlNerds, who Tech Insider originally cited as the creator of the hashtag. The following week, on May 23rd, Vox published an article about the hashtag and its creation.[4] Following the controversy, @BlackGirlNerds helped launched a new hashtag: "ThronesYall" (shown below).[5]

On April 17th, 2019, VICE aired a short documentary on the community surrounding #DemThrones entitled "Black Game of Thrones Fans Have Built Their Own Universe Around Westeros." Within one week, the video has received more than 100,000 views (shown below).
