Dave Portnoy vs. Dragon Pizza Video refers to a viral video in which Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy gets into an argument with the owner of Somerville, Massachusetts pizza restaurant Dragon Pizza while giving the restaurant's pizza a negative review as part of his One Bite series. The video led to debate about who was in the right in the argument, as well as jokes about a bystander and rapper named "Dom of the Year" who jumps in to promote himself during the review and subsequent altercation.

Origin

On August 31st, 2023, the One Bite Pizza Reviews channel posted an episode of their One Bite series, hosted by Dave Portnoy, in which Portnoy reviews the restaurant Dragon Pizza in Somerset, Massachusetts. Portnoy is unimpressed with the pizza and gives the slice a 6.4. While discussing it, a rapper with the name "Dom of the Year," who once worked at the shop, begins talking to Portnoy. As Portnoy is criticizing the pizza, the owner of the restaurant walks out and asks him to leave, and the confrontation escalates into an expletive-filled shouting match. While that's going on, Dom of the Year pops into the frame to promote himself. The video gained over 261,000 views on YouTube in less than a day (shown below). It was also posted to the Barstool Sports Twitter^[1] account, where it gained over 2,300 retweets and 29,000 likes in the same time frame.

That evening, Portnoy went on Tucker Carlson's Twitter show to promote the video. Carslon's tweet gained over 15,000 retweets and 88,000 likes in less than one day (shown below).

Spread

The video quickly spread on social media as fans debated who was in the right in the argument. For example, on September 1st, 2023, Twitter^[2] user @INarteMURAT said he was on the side of the Dragon Pizza owner, saying he was right in calling Portnoy a clown. Their tweet gained over 30 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). On the other end of the spectrum, Twitter^[3] user @BigDaddyGirth said the restaurant owner "must be a lib" and that he "destroyed his business," gaining over 50 likes in a matter of hours.

However, many were thrilled by the continued cameos of "Dom of the Year" in the video. On August 31st, Twitter user @DJ_Bean wrote that Dom should be hosting a game show on network TV, gaining over 200 likes in one day (shown below, top). @BarstoolBigCat^[4] wrote that Dom was "waking up on top of the world," gaining over 2,000 likes in a matter of hours (shown below, bottom). The video caused "Dom of the Year" to trend on Twitter that day.^[5]
