About

Darth Vader's "Noooo!" refers to the widely parodied scene from the 2005 film Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith, the third and final installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy in which Darth Vader yells "No!" after finding out the fate of his pregnant wife, Padmé Amidala. This yell was also added in the 2011 Blu-Ray version of the movie Return of the Jedi. In memes, the clip has been used as an exploitable in YouTube Poops, as a reaction image and GIF, as well as various image macros over the years.

Origin

The original scene takes place during the final sequence of Star Wars Episode 3, released on May 19th, 2005, when Darth Vader awakens in the aftermath of a fight with fellow Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is then informed by Sith Lord Darth Sidious about the consequences of his rage when he inadvertently killed Padme (seen below).

On May 20th, 2005, the YTMND user Redily[7] created the YTMND "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"[8] which depicted a still from the newly released Episode III, along with the sound byte of Darth Vader saying the phrase "Nooooo!" Since then, the site has accumulated over one million views and been inducted into the YTMND Hall of Fame.

The earliest known upload specifically referencing the scene on YouTube was added on September 17th, 2006, by YouTuber[9] Robotchicken09 under the title "darth vader says NOOOOOOO" (shown below). The video received nearly 2.8 million views, 20,000 likes and 5,500 comments in roughly 14 and a half years.

Spread

Several other parodies have been added to YTMND[2][3][4] since 2005. On December 1st, 2009, the single serving site nooooooooooooooo.com[1] was launched, which features a single button that, when pressed, plays the famous catchphrase (shown below).

On September 10th, 2011, user CineWeekly uploaded a YouTube[10] video adding Vader's yell to multiple memorable movie scenes, which received almost 400,000 views in four year (shown below, left). On January 4th, 2017, YouTuber[11] Nathan Dubuc uploaded the French version of the scene, receiving over 7.5 million views in four years (shown below, right).

On October 5th, 2015, Reddit user spikesya made a post in /r/FanTheories[5] analyzing the scene, it garnered over 1,700 points (91% upvoted) before being archived.

Do Not Want

"Do Not Want" refers to the erroneous subtitles that appeared in a Chinese bootleg DVD version of Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, comically mistranslated as Star War The Backstroke of the West. Found on June 7th, 2005, by blogger Jeremy Winterso,[6] the movie included many Engrish translations including the “Jedi Council” becoming “The Presbyterian Church” and “the force” becoming “the wish power.” During the pivotal scene where Darth Vader learns of Padmé's death, his famous line “NOOO” was translated as “Do not want" instead.
