About
Daring Today, Aren't We is an exploitable image macro series depicting animated character Squidward taking the order of a customer inside the Krusty Krab from the Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob Squarepants. The format is typically used to mock cliches or unoriginal opinions and takes on various subjects by expressing an unsurprised reaction from Squidward upon hearing the “order.”
Origin
The original clip that the meme is pulled from is seen during season one, episode 6B titled “Pickles,” released on August 21st, 1999, specifically the clip where Squidward takes the order of a random customer. During the scene (featured below), Squidward is seen working the cash register when a blue fish enters the Krusty Krab and begins giving his order. As the order unfolds, Squidward sarcastically mocks him for choosing a mundane selection, which he concludes with “Daring today, aren’t we” as he scribbles it down on a notepad.
Although the exact first use of the scene as a meme format is unknown, it appears online as early as 2018. One such example was uploaded to Imgur[1] on July 26th, 2018, by user Bowen1985. The meme (seen below) uses the template to mock reposters.
