Dank Memes for Edgy Teens is the first of a common phrasal template used for Facebook meme pages. While the names may vary, the common format is "X Memes for Y Teens."

Origin

The earliest known iterations comes from the Facebook group "Dank Memes for Edgy Teens," a Facebook meme page, which launched on May 20th, 2015.^[1] The page's about section reads, "There are teenagers in the world today that threaten suicide and don't know the grace of a rare Pepe. Won't you save a life today by sending a dank meme?" In two years, the page has amassed more than 1,300 likes and 1,300 followers.

Since the launch of "Dank Memes for Edgy Teens," several Facebook groups using some variation on the name have begun posting and sharing memes. Among the most popular is "Edgy Teens," which as of May 2017 has more than 539,000 likes.^[12]

On October 11th, 2015, the Facebook page Eric's Creamy Memes for Depressed Teens (now called Eric's Creamy Memes posted their first picture (shown below).^[3] The post has received more than 125 shares and 460 reactions in the 18 months. The phrase "creamy memes for depressed teens" has since been used around the internet, including other Facebook pages,^[4][7] YouTube videos,^[5] and i\Imgur posts.^[6] According to a thread on the subreddit /r/CringeAnarchy made on December 15th, the Facebook page "Eric's Creamy Memes for Depressed Teens" told its followers to trolls a specific user.^[2]

The origin of the template has prompted several people start threads on Stack Exchange^[13] and the /r/OutOfTheLoop^[14] subreddit to ask where it comes from.

As of May 2017, numerous Facebook groups named themselves or changed their names to some form of the template, including Ironic Memes for Edgy teens (more than 37,000 likes),^[8] UC Berkeley Memes for Edgy Teens (more than 87,000 likes,^[9] Supreme Zesty Memes for Teens (more than 300,000 likes),^[10] Edgy Memes for Edgy Teens for Edgy Screams (more than 119,000 likes),^[11] and more.
