About
Damn, Y'all Broke Up? Nah, She Broke. I'm Up is a catchphrase used on TikTok to show a person's before and after "glow-up," often paired with a video of Woody from Toy Story dapping up Buzz Lightyear. The phrase was coined on Twitter in 2019 before being used to caption image macros of ironic hustle culture and Pics That Go Hard, followed by the TikTok trend in the early 2020s.
Origin
On July 3rd, 2019, Twitter[1] user AeirronCAC tweeted the first-known iteration of the catchphrase, only excluding the word "damn." In three years, his tweet received roughly seven likes and nine retweets (shown below).
Spread
Continuing into 2019, multiple Twitter[2][3] users reiterated the phrase. In 2020, tweets and memes using it as a caption became more viral. For instance, on May 17th, 2020, Twitter[4] user slimslumslam captioned a photograph of a guy laying in the backseat of a car with hundreds of $20 bills spread across his body, earning roughly 123,100 likes in two years (shown below). On May 18th, 2020, Facebook [5] user Jazmin Horton posted the same meme, earning roughly 2,900 reactions in two years.
On October 12th, 2020, Twitter[6] user BizMarc_E tweeted the phrase, captioning an image of Toby from The Office holding a stack of cash, originally created by Instagram user adam.the.creator. In two years, the tweet received roughly 114,700 likes (shown below, left). This tweet inspired many Twitter users to join the trend going into the rest of the year and into 2021. For instance, on October 13th, 2020, Twitter[7] user cowboij captioned photos of herself fake levitating, earning roughly 257,800 likes in two years (shown below, right).
Additionally, reposts using the phrase spread to iFunny in 2020. For instance, iFunnyer[8] TimmyTheStreamer reposted BizMarc_E's tweet[6] on October 16th, 2020, earning roughly 7,400 smiles in two years.
TikTok Trend
On August 8th, 2021, TikToker[9] michaelations used the catchphrase in text overlay on a Playboi Carti video, earning roughly 1.8 million plays and 228,800 likes in 11 months (shown below, left). This is the first-known TikTok to use the phrase. More TikTokers followed michaelations' example. For instance, on October 30th, 2021, TikToker[10] stephrashell used the catchphrase in a video that gained roughly 10,400 plays and 1,900 likes in nine months (shown below, right).
In mid-2022, the phrase was used en masse by TikTokers, started by a video posted on July 8th, 2022, from TikToker[11] fylertunke, who said the phrase over the song "007" by ROT KEN[12] and showed himself meeting a life-size King Julian from Madagascar. His video received roughly 353,100 plays and 87,200 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). Other TikTokers started using fylertunke's sound in their own videos, earnestly showing their "glow-ups." For instance, on July 14th, 2022, TikToker[13] storm_trooper5.fo posted a glow-up video with the sound, earning roughly 107,800 plays and 23,200 likes in 11 days (shown below, right).
On July 21st, 2022, TikToker[14] mr.clean_s14 used the audio but ended his TikTok with a video of Woody from Toy Story dapping up Buzz Lightyear, earning roughly 1.2 million plays and 269,600 likes in four days (shown below, left). This inspired many TikTokers to also use the Woody video. It was originally posted on June 16th, 2022 by TikToker[15] markcannatarofilms who was following the I Didn't Realize You Were Chilling Dog trend. The Woody video received roughly 799,700 plays and 147,900 likes in one month (shown below, right).
