Cuomosexual is a hashtag created in praise of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo during the Coronavirus outbreak. Cuomo had been praised for demonstrating leadership during the pandemic. In particular, his daily televised briefings about the pandemic attracted media and online praise. The hashtag was inspired by a parody song created by YouTuber Randy Rainbow, who used the term expressing sarcastic sexual attraction towards Cuomo. As the hashtag spread, it was criticized as people reminded others of some divisive policies Cuomo implemented or failed to implement, such as cutting Medicaid during the pandemic and refusing to put a moratorium on rent during the pandemic.

Origin

On April 6th, 2020, YouTuber Randy Rainbow posted a musical parody praising Andrew Cuomo, set to the tune of "Sandy" from the musical Grease. In the song, he uses the line "I identify as Cuomosexual." The song gained over 326,000 views on YouTube. Randy Rainbow also tweeted the video, gaining over 13,000 retweets and 49,000 likes.^[1]

Spread

After tweeting the video, the hashtag "Cuomosexual" began spreading on Twitter. User @cindygallop^[2] posted, "We are all @randyrainbow on this one. #cuomosexual #stayhome #newyorktough," gaining over 290 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, left). User Grace Kaufman also praised the video, gaining over 220 retweets and 1,700 likes (shown below, right).

Others were much more critical of the hashtag. Twitter user @Wperiyasamy^[3] tweeted a list of actions Cuomo had taken during the pandemic which she felt were negative, gaining over 910 retweets and 2,500 likes (shown below, left). User @mynameisjro^[4] also posted a list of negative Cuomo political actions, gaining over 200 retweets and 570 likes.
