History

On August 7th, 2023, several alcohol-focused online publications, including Vinepair[1] and Tequila Raiders,[2] noticed that a "Dunkin Spiked" website[3] is under construction. The website promises that Dunkin is about to release alcoholic iced coffee and iced tea products to stores. It appears that the products will be made in collaboration with Harpoon Brewery.[2] The two companies previously collaborated on a limited-edition brand of beer.

Online Presence

The product began going viral on social media on August 9th, 2023, when Twitter user @BOSBruinsHC[4] posted a picture of the upcoming product, gaining over 190 retweets, 2,200 likes and 1,500 quote-tweets in one day (shown below).

As awareness of the product spread, many made jokes anticipating that it would lead to unruly drunken behavior, particularly in Massachusetts, where Dunkin Donuts is quite popular.

For example, on August 10th, Twitter user @JordanMeehan[5] joked that the state would not survive the product, gaining over 160 retweets and 1,600 likes in three hours (shown below, left). The same day, user @fivepoisonskid[6] joked Boston would become "Mad Max" in "two weeks" due to the product, gaining over 4,500 retweets and 31,000 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).

Also on August 10th, Twitter user @jetgreguar posted a fight from Dragon Ball to joke about the potential state of Massachusetts upon the beverages' release, gaining over 40 retweets and 140 likes in one hour (shown below, top). The same day, user @ConorRyan_93 posted the Boston Cop Slide Video to describe how the state would fare once the drinks were released, gaining over 150 likes in less than an hour (shown below, bottom).

The spiked coffee drinks continued inspiring memes into mid-August 2023 with websites like Memebase[7] covering them in articles.
