About

A Butter Board is a food trend where you spread softened butter topped with a variety of seasonings across a charcuterie board and serve it with warm bread, the idea being to dip the bread in the butter. The trend was started on TikTok by Justine Doiron in September 2022, who says she wants the butter board to be "the new charcuterie board." The idea was inspired by the cookbook Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables by Josh McFadden.

History

On September 16th, 2022, TikToker[1] @justine_snacks posted a video where she explains how to make a butter board. In the video, she spreads softened butter onto a charcuterie board and adds flaky salt, lemon zest, herbs and honey overtop of it. She suggests serving it with warm bread. She also says it was inspired by the chef Joshua McFadden and wants the butter board to be the next charcuterie board. The video gained over 8.1 million views in six days.

Butter Boards spread across TikTok over the following days as other users created and showed off their own. The trend was reported on by a variety of food and media sites in the following days. On September 20th, Today,[5] Eater,[6] and Bon Apetit[7] reported on butter boards. In the Bon Apetit article, several Bon Apetit employees give their opinions on the recipe, with some doubtful that it will catch on like charcuterie boards.
