Markiplier Crying refers to a series of remix videos featuring footage of YouTube Let's Player Markiplier crying over footage of various humorous or poorly-received attempts at sincerity.

Origin

The footage of Markiplier crying comes from a June 22nd, 2015 video of his in which he reacts to having 8 million subscribers, which gained over 11 million views (shown below).

Spread

Remixes featuring the footage of Markiplier crying began appearing on YouTube and Instagram in the beginning of October of 2017. The earliest known videos to use the footage were posted on October 1st, 2017. One of the more popular examples from this day was posted by Instagram user erniec3gaming, gaining over 3,900 views (shown below).

The following day, a post about the growing meme was posted to /r/memeeconomy.^[1] A popular compilation of the videos was posted to YouTube on October 4th by YouTuber Dank Panda, which gained 168,000 views (shown below, left), crediting most of the videos to Instagram user @shittybu, whose account has since been deleted. Another popular video was posted to YouTube on October 7th by user RealNibba and featured Markiplier crying to Gary Come Home, gaining over 260,000 views (shown below, right).

The meme saw increased attention after it was discussed by PewDiePie in a video from February 26th, 2018 (shown below).
