Crying Barbie, also known as Margot Robbie Crying, is an image macro and caption meme format featuring Hollywood actress Margot Robbie crying in a scene from the 2023 film Barbie. The meme was popularized around the release of the Barbie movie in July 2023 and is typically used in reference to the film or to express sadness and frustration in general.

Origin

Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie was released in theaters on July 21st, 2023. A T.V. spot trailer^[1] from the film focussing on Barbie traversing "the real world" showed a scene in which Margot Robbie is seen crying (seen below).

The earliest known memetic use of the still in which Barbie, played by Robbie, can be seen crying was a July 12th, 2023, tweet^[2] from @MediumSizeMeech that read, "Too many people are just finding out what Zayn Malik’s speaking voice sounds like. Sure he has the singing voice of an angel, but WHERE have y’all been????" The tweet gathered over 50,000 likes in two weeks (seen below).
