About

Crazy How the Very First Sin Was a Woman Who Ate is a catchphrase derived from the lyrics of Jane Bell's "Mother Ate." In the phrase, the term "ate" references the slang term "ate," which is used similarly to the term "slay." Bell started promoting the song with previews in early March 2024 and was fully released on March 22nd. The song became a prevalent lip dub track on TikTok surrounding its release, with the phrase "crazy how the very first sin was a woman who ate" spreading independently online as a caption on various posts.

Origin

On March 9th, 2024, TikToker[1] and musician Jane Bell (@janebellsucks) posted a video in which she sings the chorus of a then-unreleased song, "Mother Ate," explaining her rationale behind the lyrics before singing, garnering over 34,000 views in a month (shown below). She continued to tease and lip dub to the song throughout the month, with a TikTok[2] video on March 10th singing the chorus gaining over 800,000 views in a month (shown below, right).

On March 21st, Bell released the song on streaming platforms, including Spotify,[3] garnering over 70,000 plays in three weeks. It was also posted to YouTube,[4] garnering over 20,000 views in the same span of time (shown below).

Crazy how the very first sin was a woman who ate
A woman who ate
She served and licked the plate

Crazy how the very first sin was a woman who ate
She chose her fate
And she said no to heaven's gate

She's mother and mother fucking ate
