Coworker Memes, also known as The Type of Video Your Coworker Shows You or Coworker Core, refers to a series of memes and tweets that build on the "coworker" stereotype. The memes label movies, TV shows, music and videos, among other interests, as media that one's coworker would enjoy, likening the coworker's taste to being normie and cringe. Notable labels used in the trend are "coworker movies," "coworker phone wallpaper," "coworker face" and "coworker videos." Memes about so-called "Coworker Core" surfaced en masse on Twitter / X in 2023, continuing into early 2024. "Coworker" became a derogatory slang term from the trend used similarly to "normie."

Origin

Currently, the first-known viral post about being subjected to a coworker's bad taste is a tweet shared by X^[1] user @danCLYNE on January 10th, 2020, who captioned an image of a man being hypnotized with, "Me being forced to watch a YouTube video a coworker thinks is funny," gaining over 2,800 likes in four years (shown below).

Spread

In 2023, memes that perpetuated the "coworker" stereotype surfaced en masse. For instance, on February 13th, 2023, X^[2] user @yesitsmyaccount posted a video of his coworker showing him a Family Guy clip, captioned, "Hanging out with my favorite coworker," earning over 49,000 likes in a year (shown below).

On October 8th, 2023, X^[3] user @libralaur quoted the It's the Way You Act video with, "This the type of video ur coworker shows u and u gotta fake laugh with them," gaining over 11,000 likes in four months (shown below, left).

On December 26th, X^[4] user @niketotebag posted a similar tweet, quoting a clip from the Whatever Podcast with, "this is the type of video your 36 year old coworker shows you in the break room," earning over 19,000 likes in two months (shown below, right).

On December 30th, 2023, X^[5] user @prizedpony quoted a video of skeleton-themed artwork where paint was pouring out of their skulls. @prizedpony wrote, "Average coworker phone wallpaper," gaining over 102,000 likes in two months (shown below, left).

The tweet was screenshotted and reposted across social media, like one screenshot shared by Instagram^[6] user @dopecontent.inc2 on January 3rd, 2024, that received roughly 21,200 likes in two months (shown below, right).

On February 1st, 2024, X^[7] user @buggirl29 quoted a photo of Ned's Declassifed stars Devon Werkheiser and Lindsey Shaw with, "They have a chronic case of coworker face," receiving roughly 96,000 likes in three days (shown below, left).

On February 3rd, X^[8] user @haterperson6714 quoted a video of "Historic paintings given expressions" with, "coworker core," gaining over 32,000 likes in a day (shown below, right).
