Cousin Walk, also known as Walk With The Cousins, is a Thanksgiving tradition in which only the cool, older cousins get to go on a walk to get away from the rest of the family or to smoke. The trend was popularized online in a series of comedy skits and memes on TikTok, Twitter and Reddit.

Origin

One of the earliest mentions of the "Cousin Walk" was uploaded on Urban Dictionary ^[1] on November 28th, 2019, by user izzie127. The post (shown below), describes this action as "the walk your cousins go on at Thanksgiving, only the cool, older cousins get to go. This walk is simply to smoke cigarettes or weed." The post amassed roughly 58 likes in four years.

Spread

The phrase became commonly paired in memes related to smoking weed with cousins. For instance, on November 25th, 2021, X^[2] user @totalfratmove uploaded an image of a stoned Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck (shown below) paired with the caption "You and your cousin rolling up to Thanksgiving dinner after your walk." The post amassed over 560 likes and 18 retweets in two years.

On November 24th, 2023, TikTok^[3] user @tonystatovci posted a comedy skit video about the "cousin walk" (shown below, left), which garnered over 5.6 million plays and 1.2 million likes in three days. On the same day, TIkTok^[4] user jamarkuss._celebrated being "old enough" to go on the "walk with the cousins." The video (shown below, right) amassed roughly 6.3 million plays and 1.5 million likes in three days.
