Coughing Varys or Heaving Varys refers to a still image of Game of Thrones character Varys coughing out water after surviving a shipwreck. Online, the image has been used as an exploitable and a reaction image, often to illustrate various disappointing realizations.
Origin
On May 5th, 2019, episode four The Last of the Starks of season eight of HBO-produced fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered.[1] In one scene of the episode, character Varys, portrayed by Conleth Hill, is shown lying on the beach, coughing to get water out of his lungs after surviving a shipwreck.
Spread
On May 6th, 2019, Redditor enterprise1 posted the image to /r/freefolk subreddit as a reaction image.[2] The post gained over 51,200 upvotes in one week.
In the following days, the image gained significant spread on Reddit as an exploitable, often used to illustrate various disappointing realizations.[3] Additionally, the image gained popularity on /tv/ board of imageboard 4chan, with posts often utilizing a format in which Varys's speech is being interrupted by coughing and wheezing.[4]
