Cory Book Coffee Tweets refers to the repetitive use of a joke by United States Senator Cory Booker in which he claims to have ended a romantic relationship with sleep in lieu of coffee.
The first coffee- and sleep-related tweeted was posted by Booker on May 29th, 2009. That day, he posted,[1] "'Sleep' and I broke up a few nights ago. I'm dating 'Coffee' now. She's Hot!" The post received more than 1,300 retweets and 3,300 likes in 10 years (shown below).
Over the next decade, Booker posted a variation of the joke more than 10 times, elaborating on the relationship between the two anthropomorphized versions of both "sleep" and "coffee." In these posts, he occasionally swaps which idea he is currently dating (examples below).[2]
On March 18th, 2019, Twitter[3] user @bananafitz posted a thread compiling the tweets and mocking them (shown below). They wrote in the initial tweet, "we should vet every presidential candidate but digging up their tweets from 2009 is a low blow. every tweet from 2009 is bad." The post received more than 2,500 retweets and 21,000 likes in 24 hours.
Following @bananafitz's posts, others began meme-ing the tweets, using popular formats as representations of coffee and sleep (examples below). Such memes used, including Distracted Boyfriend, "Left Exit 12"/memes/left-exit-12-off-ramp/ and more.
Several media outlets covered the tweets, including The Guardian,[4] Fox News, [5] Elle[6] and more.
