About

"Cortei O Cabelo, Gostaram?" or "I Just Did My Hair, Did Y'all Like?" in English refers to a series of ironic memes in Portuguese mocking people who do everything to show off their body features on the internet. The meme's premise implies the subject is posting a picture to ask if people like your new haircut, when the highlight is not the hair itself, but their butt or another body part viewers might find suggestive. The meme became popular in April 2019 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Origin

The phrase "Cortei o Cabelo, Gostaram?" has been used for captions by Portuguese speakers on social media to ask the opinions of friends and family on a new haircut the person just did. However, around November 2018 the phrase gained a new meaning after Facebook[1] user Nick Alencar posted a picture (seen below) of him mimicking a girl's pose for thirst trap content. He added the caption "I just did my hair, did y'all like?" He received 29 likes and 5 shares in five years.

Spread

Posts joking with the phrase remained on Facebook for a few months until April 2019, when Twitter and other social media sites started posting memes using the phrase. For example, Twitter[2] user @blessedbrruno posted a scene from the Brazilian version of MasterChef in which a cooked chicken is showing its opening, mocking the thirst trap pose. The tweet (seen below), uploaded on April 24th, garnered 758 likes and 179 retweets in four years.

People also created versions of the meme featuring animated characters. For instance, on April 24th, 2019, Twitter[3] user @paulozhre uploaded a thirst trap fan art of Sonic doing the "cortei o cabelo, gostaram?" pose. The tweet (seen below, left) garnered 63 likes and 14 retweets in four years. The Brazilian Twitter[4] page of @DuolingoBrasil also joined in on the meme on November 18th, 2022, posting their owl mascot doing the thirst trap pose. The post (seen, below, right) garnered 73,000 likes 4,900 retweets in six months.

Some celebrities also joined the trend, doing the thirst trap pose and using the caption in their posts. For example, the Brazilian drag queen[5] Pabllo Vittar posted a picture (seen below, left) on July 16th, 2019, doing the trend, which garnered her 19,200 likes and 1,900 retweets in four years. Brazilian comedian @FabioPorchat[6] also posted a picture (seen below, right) doing the trend on September 3rd, 2021, receiving 32,600 likes and 592 retweets in two years.
