On January 22nd, 2020, Twitter [1] user @vainconsumer tweeted the earliest available usage of the hashtag (shown below). They wrote, "take the #coronaviruschallenge and get sneezed on today #coronavirus #lifehack."

Two days later, Instagram [3] user @laultimabirra shared a photograph of a man holding a six-pack of Coron-brand beer. They captioned the post, "Nos fuimos de coronavirus. Es viernes y el hígado lo pide. #CoronavirusChallenge" (shown below, left).

On March 5th, the government of South Africa confirmed its first cases of the novel coronavirus.[2] That day, citizens of the nation began posting makeshift ways to protect one's self from the virus using the hashtag "#coronaviruschallenge." That morning, Twitter[3] user @Scaleandmove shared an image of man with an anti-virus disc attached to his face. The post received more than 2,000 likes and 400 retweets in less than one month (shown below, right).



Over the next few weeks, the hashtag archived a variety of activities, from how people protect themselves from the virus to how they entertain themselves while in quarantine (example below).
