About

Core Values is an expression often used to mock a statement delivered by Joe Cuellar, the head of the Evo Japan video game tournament, which claimed a live stream promoting the game Dead or Alive Six was not a reflection of the company's "core values."

Origin

On February 14th, 2019, a live stream promoting the game Dead or Alive Six was hosted on the Evo Japan Twitch channel. During the stream, two models were filmed touching each other's breasts and buttocks (shown below, left). Additionally, the game was paused as a character was performing a "power bomb" move in a sexually suggestive position (shown below, right).

The stream abruptly ended with Joel Cuellar issuing a statement on Twitter, saying what occurred does not represent EVO or FGC's "core values." The tweet was later deleted.

Spread

Shortly after, Evo employee Mark Julio appeared on stream to echo apologize for the stream (shown below).

Online, many mocked Cuellar's apology and criticized the event for not allowing sexual content while showcasing games with extreme violence, like Mortal Kombat 11. Meanwhile, a Reddit^[2] thread on the subject was created to discuss the incident, garnering more than 1,200 points (97% upvoted) within four days. On February 15th, the news site Dexerto published an article about the controversy titled "Evo Japan stops Twitch stream after multiple NSFW incidents."
