About

The Coquette Aesthetic Trend is a TikTok trend in which participants tie ribbons into bows around unconventional objects, including things like food, ice cubes, people and animals, often set to the Lana Del Rey song "Let The Light In." The memes and trend are inspired by the coquette girl aesthetic, which is largely tied to Lana Del Rey. The trend was popularized in December 2023.

Origin

The "coquette aesthetic" has been described by Seventeen[1] as a style of "embracing and indulging in all things romantic and beautiful, like lace, pom-poms, flushed blush, pretty hair accessories, and light colors." Yes Style[2] describes it as a celebration of "light-hearted femininity" that "also pays homage to the vintage Americana era by romanticizing nostalgic summer fashion." The aesthetic is often linked to musical artist Lana Del Rey.

On December 2nd, 2023, TikToker[3] @folklaurlover posted a video set to "Let the Light In" filming a pink ribbon tied around a plate of pasta, writing in the description, "it’s so coquette in here >.<" garnering over 3.3 million views in six days (shown below). This is the earliest known viral example of the trend.

Spread

The trend spread over the following days, inspiring numerous viral examples as TikTokers attached ribbons to the most absurd objects possible. On December 3rd, 2023, TikToker[4] @hhaileeeeee posted a video of ribbons around her Chick-fil-A meal, garnering over 1.6 million views in five days (shown below, left). On December 5th, TikToker[5] @partiallyrosie posted a video of ribbons around ice cubes, garnering over 9.5 million views in three days (shown below, right).

On December 6th, X[6] user @sillylilcalz posted several screenshots of videos following the trend, writing, "I think this is my favorite trend right now on tiktok," garnering over 1,800 likes in two days.

That same day, TikTokers[7][8] @favpimpcess and @.lilysoswaggggbruhhh posted videos following the trend, the former filming a stack of money with a ribbon and the latter their middle finger with a ribbon, garnering over 2.5 million and 20 million views, respectively, in two days (shown below, left and right).
