Origin

On January 13th, 2009, YouTuber Lonely Boy Ind.[1] uploaded a video titled "Cool Guy Has a Chill Day." As of October 2014, the video has gained over 3.7 million views.

Spread

On July 26th, 2011, the video was posted on College Humor.[5] On January 27th, 2012, a Facebook page[6] for the video was created. On August 30th, 2012, the Tumblr blog fuckyeahitscoolguy[3] was created. On April 15th, 2014, SoundCloud[4] user 3LIXAR uploaded a mash-up of the sounds and music in "Cool Guy Has a Chill Day" and the pop song "Never Going to Give You Up." As of October 2014, the song has gained over 3,000 listens.

On May 9th, Lonely Boy Ind. uploaded a video titled "Cool Guy 2: Enter the Funk," which features a man wearing an oversized fake head and wearing oversized fake arms dancing around in a similar manner to the original cool guy. As of October 2014, the video has gained over 350,000 views.

On the same day the two men behind Lonely Boy Ind., Devin and Anthony, hosted a Reddit AMA.[3] When a fan asked:

"At which point during or after the production of the original Cool Guy did you realize that you were responsible for the creation of a timeless, genre-defining masterpiece?"

they explained:

"Cool Guy was filmed in one day, mostly for our own amusement, so we definitely didn't know we had a hit until maybe 2 years after the video came out when it got a big bump from /r/trees… not sure what genre we are defining though, haha."
