About

"Coin Boys" Story refers to a viral post on Reddit's /r/teachers subreddit in which a teacher laments that several of his students have developed an entire identity around flipping coins, such as using coin flips to make vital decisions like whether or not to do assigned work. Though the teacher felt exasperated by the apparent fad among his students, many social media users thought the concept of "coin boys" was humorous and cheered on the students. However, the story is potentially fictional and made up, as the person behind the account is the creator of several other posts in weeks prior in which they discussed having different professions unrelated to teaching.

Origin

On July 28th, 2023, Redditor LuciusDickusMaximus made a post in /r/teachers[1] lamenting some of his high school freshman students calling themselves "coin boys" and leaving all of their life decisions to the flip of a coin. This included whether or not the "coin boys" would do their assignments, among other things. The post gained over 11,000 points in four days (seen below).

Spread

The story was widely reposted on social media, where many found themselves enjoying the coin boys' hijinks. For example, on July 28th, 2023 (the same day the story was posted), it was reposted to Twitter by user @EuologyEternal[2] with the caption "Dudes rock," where it gained over 1,800 retweets and 24,000 likes in four days (shown below, left). On July 29th, user @junestrings[3] reposted the story with the caption "this rules axtually," gaining over 2,800 retweets and 35,000 likes in three days (shown below, right).

LuciusDickusMaximus' Reddit History

In the weeks prior to posting the "coin boy" story, Redditor LuciusDickusMaximus claimed to have various professions in numerous subreddits. Professions they have professed to have include culinary associate at a retirement center,[4] working for an import/export company[5] and a "ventriloquist hitman"[7] (shown below). He also claimed in a separate post to be a rising high school senior.[6]

In November 2022, the account also went viral for a story in /r/TIFU[8] about inviting his plumber to his wife's Thanksgiving celebration.

The inconsistencies regarding the person's age and job across multiple posts suggest the "coin boys" story is likely a fabrication.
