#ClownCheck is a series of TikTok videos in which users lip sing to ICP's "Hocus Pokus" while showing off their clown cosplay kin to the TikTok trend rich boy check.

Origin

In 1997, the American hip hop duo Insane Clown Posse or ICP released their song "Hokus Pokus" which was uploaded to YouTube 12 years later garnering over 11.9 million views in ten years (shown below). In 2019, TikTok users began using a sound clip from "Hokus Pokus" to gather clown cosplayers. One the earliest and more popular of examples of #clown check was posted on May 19th. TikTok user @addyurdaddy posted the video which received over 921,300 likes and 18,500 shares in a month (shown below, right).

Spread

On June 1st, 2019, @avani posted a #clowncheck video which garnered over 3.3 million likes and 799,600 shares in a month (shown below, left). Two days later @ajnuget_ posted another featuring clown make up and lip singing (shown below, center). On June 5th @lilhuddy uploaded a video which gained over 900,300 likes and 44,800 shares in a month. Mel Magazine^[1] published an article on whether or not TikTok users are actually apart of the "Juggalo Family." One self-proclaimed Juggalo reacted to the trend by tell Mel Magazing:

“I have used TikTok in the past and have seen lots of people dressing the part, but very obvious they don’t live the life of a Juggalo or know about the culture. I myself live it 24/7, 365 days a year. I attend the Gathering and other annual Juggalo events. It is what it is about the TikTok situation, but being a Juggalo I don’t place judgment, and any real Lo will tell you the same.”
