Clown to Clown Communication or Clown to Clown Conversation refers to a reaction image and series of image macros depicting two clowns staring at each other captioned, "clown to clown communication, clown to clown conversation." The image is often used as a reaction to content where two people perceived as clowns are interacting. The image first became the subject of memes in 2019 and spread over the following years, also inspiring an edit captioned "autism to autism communication."
Origin
The "clown to clown communication" image is based on a 3D graphic meant to represent ESP. It was posted to the Braintenance Blogspot[1] blog on September 22nd, 2012, later posted by Tumblr[2] user realfootage on April 16th, 2017, garnering over 4,900 notes in six years (shown below, left). It is unclear when the clown to clown communication variant was first posted and who created it. The earliest known instance of the meme was posted by iFunny[3] user UNITEDSTATESNAVY_2018 on August 23rd, 2019, garnering over 30 smiles in four years (shown below, right).
Spread
The meme spread over the following years, with the phrase "clown to clown communication" also spreading as a way of calling people clowns online.
On December 22nd, 2019, Instagram[4] user pandawithnojams posted an image using the phrase, garnering over 9,900 likes in four years. On June 23rd, 2020, Twitter[5] user @mimiadraws posted a redraw of the meme, garnering over 3,700 likes in three years (shown below, left). On January 7th, 2021, Facebook[6] page sciencememes and Instagram[7] user pablopiqasso posted a meme using the reaction image, garnering over 4,500 reactions and 74,000 likes respectively in two years (shown below, right).
On September 19th, YouTuber[8] Luke Correia posted a video referencing the meme, where the clowns turn to the camera and Correia says, "clown to clown to clown communication," garnering over 610,000 views in two years (shown below).
On August 8th, 2022, Tumblr[9] user itsinkwell posted a redraw of the meme using the autism creature and changing the caption to "autism to autism communication," garnering over 4,400 notes in a year (shown below, left). On November 6th, Instagram[10] user adhdmemetherapy posted a version of the meme reading "adhd to adhd conversation," garnering over 18,000 likes in nine months (shown below, right).
On February 16th, 2023, Twitter[11] user @velvetbnuuy posted a video of the autism to autism meme placing Vaush and Keffals over each autism creature, garnering over 1,400 likes in six months (shown below).
