Classy If You're Rich, Trashy If You're Poor refers to a series of social media posts asking what is something that could be considered respectable if one is wealthy but unseemly if one is not. Threads asking the question have been posted to Reddit multiple times, and in July of 2020, a Twitter post asking the question went viral on the site.

Origin

On September 25th, 2015, the question, "What's considered trashy if you're poor, but classy if you're rich?" was posted to /r/AskReddit[5] by /u/GreedAndPride. Prior to being archived, the post gained over 13,000 points (91% upvoted).[5]

Spread

On June 5th, 2016, the question was again posted to Reddit[1] (posted by /u/TheManWithNoName88) and Twitter[2] (posted by @AnaSamways), gaining 10,000 points and 24,000 retweets and 14,000 likes, respectively.


In /u/TheManWithNoName's Reddit thread, some top answers included "Having someone else raise your kids," "Day drinking," "Moving to a foreign country" and "Multiple cars in front of your house." Similar threads were posted to /r/AskReddit on May 31st, 2019[3] and December 25th, 2016.[4]

In July of 2020, @AnaSamways' tweet began to go viral on Twitter, as people began retweeting her question with their own answers. Some popular examples include tweets by @McKayCoppins,[6] who wrote "Speaking two languages," gaining over 13,000 retweets and 105,000 likes (shown below, left). User @DanaSchwartzzz[7] retweeted it with the answer "Marrying a second cousin," gaining over 1,000 retweets and 14,000 likes (shown below, right).
