About
Chris Christie Portrait refers to a painting of former New Jersey Governor and Republican Presidential candidate Chris Christie. After it was unveiled in New Jersey in November of 2018, it was mocked in a series of photoshops online and criticized for its $85,000 price which would be funded with taxpayer money.
Origin
On November 19th, 2018, Chris Christie's portrait was unveiled at a private gathering in Princeton, New Jersey. A photograph of Christie standing with the portrait was tweeted by @njdotcom.[1]
Spread
Critics of Christie took umbrage with the $85,000 the painting cost in taxpayer money, which according to the Washington Post[2] was more than the previous three governor's portraits combined. Others parodied the portrait by referencing Christie's infamous Bridgegate scandal in which Christie's office intentionally sought to shut down local access to the bridge as a political retribution against Fort Lee mayor Mark Sokolich for declining to endorse the governor's re-election campaign and Christie's Beach Picture in photoshops (examples shown below). The memes were covered by The Daily Dot.[3]
