Choppelganger is a slang term describing someone who looks like a chopped version of you, meaning they look less attractive. The term began spreading online as early as May 2025 on X / Twitter, becoming increasingly popular over the following months on sites including TikTok and X. The term is a portmanteau of the words "chopped" and "doppelganger."

Origin

On May 20th, 2025, X^[1] user @2seatlimousine quote-posted a user who shared a video of someone claiming that their husband is Kendrick Lamar's doppelganger. The user commented, "My dyslexic ass read this as 'choppelganger' and I think I just made a word for someone who looks like u but very slightly and subtly worse," garnering over 1,300 likes in eight months. This is the earliest known use of the term.

Spread

On October 23rd, 2025, X^[2] user @rococokaren posted, "Choppelgänger, noun. Someone that looks like you, but very chopped," garnering over 54,000 likes and 4,900 reposts in three months.

On October 26th, TikToker^[3] @lilcowgirlie posted a video using the term, captioned, "In that moment of my cycle where I'm giving choppelganger," garnering over 549,000 views in three months.

On December 5th, X^[4] user @bylerity posted two images of Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things, writing, "that’s not Mike that’s Mikes choppelganger 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭," garnering over 6,400 likes in a month.

On December 20th, 2025, TikToker^[5] @sanjipami posted a video captioned, "My best friend's boyfriend recently coined the term choppelganger.. Everyone has a choppelganger it's like someone who almost looks like you but chopped. Or maybe you're someone's choppelganger idk. Food for thought. Yellow text," garnering over 3.4 million views in three weeks.

On January 4th, 2026, X^[6] user @millerlowlife89 posted, "when his ex is my choppelganger …," garnering over 22,000 likes and 1,200 reposts in three days.
