Cholafied is a single topic blog which curates photos of celebrities that are edited to appear as if they're wearing exaggerated Chola-style makeup, designated by thin, drawn on eyebrows and thick lip liner.

Origin

The single topic blog, Cholafied^[1], was created on February 13th, 2012 by Californian art student Michael Jason Enriquez.^[2] The first post^[9] on the blog featured Nicolas Cage in Chola style makeup.

"Cholo" Subculture

The Cholo (male) and Chola (female) stereotypes stem from an ethnic slur used in the 1600s^[3] in Central America to describe people of a racially mixed heritage. In 1960s California, youths of Mexican descent identifying with the Pachuco^[4] and Chicano^[5] subcultures, adopted the world "cholo" as a label for themselves, attempting to reclaim it as a source of pride.

The fashion codes of the Cholo/Chola subculture typically includes loose-fitting clothing, plaid button-up shirts and distinct facial make-up such as dark lipstick and penciled-in eyebrows. It was brought back into style by celebrities including Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani^[6] and Kat Von D.^[7] "Chola" was first defined on Urban Dictionary^[8] on April 21st, 2003 as "a mexican gangsta girl."

Spread

On February 16th, Los Angeles Latin culture blog Remezcla^[10] featured several of the images and declared the site its favorite Tumblr of the week. The next day, that link was reposted on Latino news aggregator site HispanicTips.^[11] On February 23rd, the Huffington Post^[12] featured several of the images in a slideshow. Also on the 23rd, LA Weekly^[13] covered the blog and it was submitted to Buzzfeed.^[14]
