About
Chloe Grace Moretz Family Guy Meme refers to a picture of the actress carrying pizza which is frequently paired with images of a minor Family Guy character, Legs Go All The Way Up Griffin, who has very long legs. The meme was often used to mock and body-shame Moretz, who spoke out in a 2022 interview, saying "to this day, when I see that meme, it’s something very hard for me to overcome."
Origin
On May 23rd, paparazzi photographers took pictures of Chloë Grace Moretz carrying two pizzas into her hotel in New York. These pictures (seen below) were published in the DailyMail and other outlets.[1]
The next day, users on 9Gag, Reddit's /r/Celebs, and other forums committed to looking at the bodies of female celebrities posted the photo, with commentary about Moretz's long legs.[5]
It is unclear when or where the picture of Moretz was first connected to the Family Guy character Legs Go All The Way Up. An edited version of the original photo, which reduced the size of Moretz's waist and stomach to make her legs seem longer, started circulating in mid-June of 2016, if not earlier.
Spread
The doctored image of Moretz carrying the pizzas spread widely that summer, with early posts on Twitter by a since-deleted account on July 14th and a post on Tumblr by Jumex (seen below) which was captioned "mood" and received over 9,000 notes on July 18th, 2016.[3]
By mid-July 2016, users began to comment on Moretz's posts on Twitter with pictures of the character. For example, reply guy @ItsDaveyon posted a reply using an image of the character to a tweet shared by Moretz on July 18th, 2016, earning over 1,300 likes.[2]
In a September 20th, 2022 profile with entertainment magazine Hunger, Moretz said:[6]
I’ve actually never really talked about this, but there was one meme that really affected me, of me walking into a hotel with a pizza box in my hand. And this photo got manipulated into a character from Family Guy with the long legs and the short torso, and it was one of the most widespread memes at the time. Everyone was making fun of my body and I brought it up with someone and they were like, ‘Oh, shut the fuck up, it’s funny.’ And I just remember sitting there and thinking, my body is being used as a joke and it’s something that I can’t change about who I am, and it is being posted all over Instagram. It was something so benign as walking into a hotel with leftovers. And to this day, when I see that meme, it’s something very hard for me to overcome.
Media outlets picked up the story of Moretz's anger over the meme, seeing it as representative of others who have developed body image issues after seeing themselves mocked online for how they look. The meme was part of a larger trend in which users modified and photoshopped Moretz's body, often making her appear buff.
