Chilling at the Tiki refers to an image macro character from a 4chan thread about a user who finds multiple copies of a mysterious character on his younger brother's phone. After the thread spread around 4chan, the character was photoshopped into different meme templates.

Origin

On July 4th, 2017, an anonymous 4chan user posting in /b/ posted a story about how he saw several copies of the same image on his brother's phone. The image showed a boy with a distorted face and a caption that read "Chilling at the Tiki." He attempted to ask his brother what it meant but his brother refused to answer. The thread was screengrabbed and posted to /r/4chan^[1] on July 8th, 2017 (shown below).

Spread

The original thread was reposted to /x/, 4chan's paranormal board, the same day.^[2] In the following days, the image became a meme on the site as users photoshopped the character into different images. On July 5th, two anonymous users posted a photoshop to an /x/^[3] board about the image (shown below).

Other threads posted that day featured several photoshops of the meme. For example, one user posted a photoshop that included the character on a Sonic the Hedgehog cover (shown below, left). Another made a postcard parody featuring the character (shown below, right).
