Chiitan Removing the Costume, also known as Chiitan Hornyposting, refers to a series of fan art and memes that depict the person playing the Japanese mascot Chiitan removing the costume to reveal themselves underneath. The fan art format achieved virality in late June 2024 following the spread of Chiitan Twitter Ads and the If Chiitan Replies trend, with some users denouncing the trend over Chiitan being a "0-year-old fairy otter."

Origin

In late June 2024, following the spread of Chiitan Twitter Ads, Chiitan regained virality on X / Twitter, with users sharing memes and fan art of the character, including fan art sexualizing the person inside the mascot costume.

On June 28th, 2024, X^[1] user @PearlteaRizzy posted a suggestive fan art that received over 2,000 reposts and 17,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On June 30th, X^[2] user @dingotoad posted fan art that gained over 23,000 reposts and 291,000 likes in two years (shown below, right).

Spread

The suggestive fan art of the character prompted a viral discussion on X / Twitter, with some users expressing concerns over artists sexualizing the mascot who is supposed to be a baby otter.

For example, on June 28th, 2024, X^[3] user @brndxix wrote, "you people are sick," with the post gaining over 2,400 reposts and 81,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On June 30th, X^[4] user @noodleshopkenz urged others not to draw suggestive fan art of the character, with the post (shown below, right) garnering over 8,000 reposts and 171,000 likes in two days.

The debate prompted more fan art of the person playing the mascot removing the costume, including humorous versions. For example, on June 29th, X^[5] user @FatalAfterDark posted a fan art of the person inside the costume showing an ID. The post (shown below, left) received over 210 reposts and 1,900 likes in four days.

On July 2nd, 2024, X^[6] user @TripleKyun posted a humorous fan art depicting Todd Howard being the person inside the costume. The post (shown below, right) received over 1,900 reposts and 22,000 likes in one day.
