Cheese Slice Bookmark refers to a series of tweets from libraries revealing the odd items they've found wedged into a book like a bookmark. The tweets began in January 2020 when one library share a picture of a slice of American cheese found in one of their returns.

Origin

On January 21st, 2020, the Twitter^[1] account of the University of Liverpool Library tweeted a picture of a single slice of cheese with the caption, "This is not a bookmark" (shown below). The tweet gained over 213,000 likes and 36,000 retweets in two days.

Spread

On January 21st, 2020, numerous other library Twitter accounts revealed pictures of strange items they've found in their books. The University of Surrey Library commented using their Twitter^[3] account that the cheese pictured was not actually cheese (shown below, left). The tweet received over 5,300 likes in two days. That day, the Leys Library Twitter account shared their image of a cookie in one of their returned books (shown below, right).

The next day, The University of Liverpool Library tweeted an image of the slice of cheese as a Time Magazine cover and tweeted "While we are surprised by the 100k likes, we know we can always rely on #LibraryTwitter for some cheesy puns. We will pick the best pun and post the cheese slice to the winner!" (shown below).
