Charlie Questions Pim refers to a scene from the animated series Smiling Friends in which the character Charlie is weirded out to learn that his friend Pim used to kiss his dad on the mouth as a kid. Online, an image of Charlie staring at Pim has been used as a reaction image, used to react to cases of people sharing weird and inappropriate information about themselves.
Origin
On January 9th, 2022, episode six "Enchanted Forest" of season one of the animated series Smiling Friends premiered.[1] In the episode, the character Pim has a flashback about his father not allowing him to go on an adventure, which ends with Pim kissing his dad on the mouth. Weirded out, Pim's friend Charlie questions him about it.
On January 12th, YouTube[2] user CC.mp3 uploaded the clip, with the video accumulating over 172,000 views in two years (shown below).
On September 20th, 2022, X[3] / Twitter user @HomestuckHoovy posted the earliest found meme based on the scene, quoting a since-deleted post by another user with a still image of Charlie looking weirded out. The post (shown below) garnered over 3,500 reposts and 51,000 likes in two years.
Spread
On December 11th, 2022, X user @RealYouTubeKids used the image to react to a post by Jordan Peterson (since removed). On that day, Redditor vortxo
posted a screenshot of the post to the /r/196[4] subreddit, where it gained over 5,000 upvotes in two years.
The format saw further spread on X / Twitter and Reddit through 2023. Notably, on January 25th, 2023, @RealYouTubeKids used the image for another quote post, with the comment gaining over 6,300 reposts and 70,000 likes on X[5] (shown below, left). On August 1st, X[6] user @Hola_Jonah used the reaction image, with their post gaining over 30 reposts and 6,200 likes in 10 months (shown below, right).
On March 2nd, 2024, TikTok[7] user @travelbeef posted an edit referencing the Harkonnen Kiss scene from Dune: Part Two, with the upload garnering over 990,000 views and 135,000 likes in three months (shown below).
The format saw a surge in popularity online in May 2024, with multiple examples going viral on X at that time.
