About

Charlie Brown Had Hoes is a Twitter axiom observing how people will often assert lies or misrepresentations of history as fact on the platform. Since an August 2020 tweet observed that people will post lies like "Charlie Brown had hoes," others have cited or quoted the catchphrase when they come across a tweet they believe is spreading misinformation.

Origin

On August 31st, 2020, Twitter user @matrixreloaded_[1] tweeted, "People on here will tweet anything. 'Charlie Brown had hoes.' No he didn’t. That isn’t true." The tweet gained over 5,100 retweets and 14,000 likes in two years (shown below).

Spread

Initially, the tweet was referenced by people gently trolling and posting "Charlie Brown had hoes" (April 22nd, 2021, example from @acephallus[2] shown below, left). This led to some debate on whether or not women in Peanuts were attracted to Charlie Brown in the comic strip. In September 2021, several users then argued about the validity of the claim on the app. On September 7th, Twitter user @Speed_Stat[3] joked about the debate by referencing a Dril tweet, gaining over 50 retweets and 130 likes in roughly one year (shown below, right).

Beginning in 2022, the tweet became a common reference used to point out when the poster believed someone was telling a lie or a historical inaccuracy on the app. For example, on June 3rd, 2022, Twitter user @ColeyMick[4] remarked that basketball player Draymond Green's assessment of Game 1 of the NBA Finals amounted to a "Charlie Brown had hoes"-type of take, gaining over 17 retweets and 480 likes in roughly one month (shown below, left). In July, CNN published an article positing "no one" likes self-checkout, and on July 10th, Twitter user @greedlejuice[5] described the claim as a "charlie brown had hoes ass headline" (shown below, right).
